Build Go command-line tools that people enjoy using, trust in scripts, and install with one command.

Developers notice immediately when a command-line tool feels wrong: flags that mean different things in different commands, error messages that explain nothing, colors that end up in log files, tables that break when piped, progress bars that never clean up. Go is a superb language for CLI and TUI tools — one static binary, instant startup, easy cross-compiling — but knowing the libraries is not the same as building a tool that feels right.

This book takes one realistic tool from a first prototype with the standard flag package to a polished, tested, released, self-updating application with an interactive dashboard and a plugin system. Every convention is explained, not just applied, so you can make good decisions in your own tools.

What's inside

  • What users expect from a CLI: stdout versus stderr, exit codes, help text, quiet success, and composable output
  • Designing commands, arguments, and flags, and a first prototype with os.Args and the flag package
  • Cobra in depth: command trees, persistent flags, argument validation, hooks, groups, and testable project structure
  • Layered configuration with TOML files, environment variables, and flags, with precedence users can inspect
  • Output for humans and machines: aligned tables, stable JSON contracts, and CSV
  • Errors that users can act on, and exit codes that scripts can rely on
  • stdin, pipes, imports, and prompts that never hang in CI
  • Ctrl+C, SIGTERM, timeouts, and graceful shutdown with context
  • Color and style with Lip Gloss v2, NO_COLOR, TTY detection, and accessibility; progress bars and spinners; logging with log/slog
  • Cross-platform files and paths, atomic writes, locks, and the Windows details that bite
  • Shell completion for bash, zsh, fish, and PowerShell, help topics, and man pages
  • Interactive TUIs with Bubble Tea v2 and Bubbles: the Elm architecture, layout, tables, lists, inputs, live timers, external editors, and forms
  • Testing CLIs and TUIs: in-process command tests, golden files, testscript end-to-end scripts, update tests, frame snapshots, and teatest
  • Quality gates: cross-platform CI, the race detector, fuzzing, and linters
  • Versioning, ldflags, build info, and cross-compiling for Linux, macOS, and Windows
  • Releasing with GoReleaser, with Homebrew, Scoop, and winget manifests; self-update with checksum verification; and exec-based plugins

One running example, start to finish. You build stint, the time tracker of Ninebark Studio, a fictional product studio. Developers start and stop timers and pipe JSON into other tools, the studio lead wants billable reports and CSV for the accountant, designers want a full-screen dashboard with a live timer, and a contractor on Windows finds every portability bug. stint is small enough to understand completely, yet it needs everything a real tool needs — and its sample data is fixed, so every number in a report can be checked by hand.

Current and honest. The code targets Go 1.26 and later, was tested with Go 1.27, and uses Cobra 1.10 and the v2 generation of Bubble Tea, Bubbles, and Lip Gloss, with the differences from older v1 tutorials pointed out where they matter. Commands, outputs, and test results come from real runs. Steps that cannot run on a single development machine, such as a GoReleaser publication or a package-manager installation, are clearly marked and shown as output "similar to" what you will see. There are no invented benchmarks or statistics. Every chapter includes complete code, Tips, Notes, Warnings, Try It Yourself exercises, and Key Takeaways, and the appendices give you a cheat sheet, copy-ready templates, a production checklist, and a glossary.

Format: PDF, 515 pages (A4), linked table of contents and bookmarks. English. First Edition, 2026. Published by thenexbooks. Includes the stint starter project (Go module) that the book builds on.
